Does your child need soft academic skills?

The courses below are being offered to help students with what are usually called soft academic skills. Soft skills refer to traits or abilities that are not going to being tested in an exam usually but are essential to student success in the long run, e.g. turning in work on time, being polite and respectful to peers and adults, contributing positively in group settings, following directions carefully,  heading up correctly when handing in assignments, listening attentively and taking notes accurately and effeciently, being able to conduct research competently (typically, for various reasons, the intermediate steps leading up to the paper or project receive no grade, teacher input or feedback, only the final paper or project gets assessed.) and the like. Poor study skills are often not obvious but hide or masquerade themselves in the following ways;
  • You have been told that your child doesn’t pay attention, day dreams, is the class clown or acts out.
  • Your child avoids or doesn’t do homework.
  • Struggles with understanding his/her textbooks.
  • Waits until the last moment to complete assignments.
  • He/she does not know what to put in his/ her notes at school.
  • Has poor test preparation skills.
  • Has poor exam or report grades.
  • Lacks confidence, motivation and gives up easily, is disorganized.
  • Your child has repeated or will be repeating the academic year.
If your child has these issues then you may want to consider the Study Skills Workshop.

The Principles and Techniques of Research is targeted at  students taking or about to take subjects at the CSEC/ CAPE Level.
